thank you
we found a roll of developed film in grandpa's rolltop desk last summer; we had it developed and this is one of the few that actually included grandpa in the photo. we aren't sure when it was taken, but he spent time in texas at the very end of the war, training new soldiers, and i think that's most likely when it was taken. the vegetation in the background doesn't match that of the pacific locales he saw during the war. grandpa was an engineer in the signal corps, stationed in pearl harbor. he set up and maintained radar sites. he was sent to iwo jima, and the boat he was on had mechanical problems and arrived two weeks later than the battle.
grandfather (second from right, top row) piloted this B-24 and this was his crew. he flew bombing missions above italy, among other targets. this photo is from a website and it is called "the Dan Whitaker crew" but it offers little additional information about the men in the photo and their time during the war.
