with gratitude
there is just so much to be thankful for. i am rich in love and life. i've spent the past year and few months focusing my meditation practice on gratitude; i've tried, each day, to find things in my life that make me deeply grateful and to take time to appreciate them. at times it is a struggle, especially on days when it is raining for the third or forth in a row and it seems the sun will never return, or on days when all the news in the world is negative and depressing. but, the sun always returns, or, as i learned in seattle just a couple of months ago, we can drive above the cloud. i am incredibly aware that being here, simply being here is a gift. all that comes with it is, pun intended, gravy.
a short list of what i'm thankful for, today and always, in no particular order:
my family. the dog. my friends. birds fluttering outside my window. my doctors. my nurses. the fda. cassie and benzo. snow in october. snow in january. cross-country skis. 6am bike rides in the humid days of summer. 9am bike rides in the cold, crisp air. the smell of the boat engine when you first start it up. loons lining up in front of the dock. herons. thunderstorms that come and go. swimming in lake superior. walleye. pie. indian food. new running shoes. the tour de france. places that don't have tv. penn state. brussels sprouts. dill pickles. leaving winter and getting off a plane somewhere warm. normandy. chopping lettuce. laughing so hard it makes my abs hurt. the lama. lake harriet in winter. silent laughing. livestrong. air conditioned movie theaters in the heat of summer. the moment sun appears after it has been rainy. constellations. coffee. bluegrass. the decemberists. chickenfoot. the smell of new lumber. the smell of the workshop at the lake. getting dirt under my fingernails. hammering nails. retaining walls. earning turns on a sunny day in april. cafe au lait and toast with butter and jam. quiet mornings. early nights.
