three docs, a nurse, and a cancer patient walk into a bar...

gorilla had surgery last week. she was tired.

boston has a harbor...

this seal was smiling at me. i swear. i could watch seals for hours.

dare we say it is spring in boston?

this is the cannoli that came between me and a tall glass of water.

finally a bluebird day. my view at lunch.

you might wonder... how does she get so lucky? two trips to the capital of new england in two weeks. wow. what a jet-setter. that would be so much fun. i need to get onto that schedule. well, maybe you don't wonder. and you probably don't want a bit of this deal. but, visiting boston does have some upsides.

take, for instance, the fact the institute of contemporary art just happens to have free admission on thursday nights, which happens to be the evening i arrive. homero the bombero met me at south station and we headed for the art, and saw fantastic exhibits by roni horn and dr. lakra - two strikingly different artists. my taste leans toward roni horn, but i liked the time we spent checking out the sights.

we continued the night by walking along the waterfront, past the courthouse with its incredible glass facade facing the water and downtown, past the hotels and condos, until we reached the outdoor home of the seals at the aquarium. i was more than happy to stand and watch the animals - some lazy, others playful. they're the dogs of the sea world, i think, and i love watching their expressive faces as they use their flipper-paws to clean their teeth or rub their heads.

dinner was in the north end, another short walk from the aquarium. we took a look at a number of menus posted outside italian restaurants and finally picked one that looked crowded but not too crowded. garlic bread, antipasta, and spinach ravioli filled me to the brim and i was hopeful i'd done enough damage to weigh in at more than last week. cannoli was out at the time, but we picked up a couple to go at mike's famous italian bakery (or something like that) and off we went to meet some friends of homero. little did i know...

i didn't pack my party clothes and was still carrying my backpack full of toothpaste, sweatpants, and alk inhibitors as we walked like we knew what we were doing into a bustling, lively club in the middle of a fashion show. i sh*t you not. i haven't been to such a swanky place in years. years. i am old enough now, i think i can say that. i would have loved the night out had i been dressed for the occassion. but i ended up loving it for the laughs. a waitress finally came around to our little table and collected drink orders, but a cannoli had made its way to the table, sitting atop a patch of bakery tissue paper. powdered sugar had gone everywhere. a couple of us had stuck our fingers in the cream just for a taste. we weren't getting our drinks. not even my water. we were so tasteless. oh, the gall. it cracked me up. we weren't there too long and headed home to cambridge where we did some more walking before i finally met my futon rather happily, i must say.

in six hours i'd done more walking, eating, talking, and laughing than i had in a long time. and for the first time, maybe in more than a year, i had done it all without thinking about how tired i was. because i hadn't gotten tired. i'd even gone for a hour-long walk in new york during a layover between trains. i am feeling good. whether it is the drug or just the nice weather, i haven't figured it out yet. but the proof will be in the pudding in three weeks when i go back after my next scan. i requested the appoinment today - CT scan of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. and we'll know. but now, i think i might have an idea. as far as i can tell, i am doing better than i have in a long time.

friday was a hospital day but i started it off with an hour spent reading in a coffee ship, watching cambridge wake up to a beautiful day. i bought an incredibly cute pair of sandals because my shoes were killing my aching feet. i'll wear them all summer, so i parted with the money happily. i actually have something to bring back from boston that doesn't come in a white bottle. jimnerd has taken to calling me a drug mule. rather fitting, i guess, but i just carry them in my backpack, thankyouverymuch.

i spent a few hours at the hospital, eating lunch while i was there, then hopped the t to south station where my train was already boarding. another trip drew to a close as i flopped into an empty seat. the sun was sinking to that magic level once again and i watched the coast drift past the window. another week finished. hard work but somebody's got to do it.

How you're feeling is a great gauge as to the effectiveness of the treatment. So feeling good is a great sign! Keep on smiling, laughing and feeling good!
