all in a few weeks' time

i thought this might get your attention. it made me laugh.
probably harder than i really should have.

happy birthday to rotten. a couple of times.

this little girl was dancing in a fountain; it was a beautiful moment.

woah! triceratops sighting!
who knew they wore vans slip-ons?

a sunny reflection in a mirrored building.

morning.

afternoon.

lunchtime hike at squaw valley. i liked the downhill.

flying over central PA's spectacular ridge lines.

the babies are finally in the ground. if the rabbits eat them, i'll have to buy full-grown plants.

it has been a long few weeks without spending much time on the internet. i have to attribute it to the upgrade in the weather situation. when i have the time to play outside after work i am hungry when i am finished. when i have the energy to cook dinner, i like doing so and take the time to do it after a run and a shower. by that point, i am just about ready to get into bed and read for a few minutes before falling asleep. i've been sleeping soundly, at least up until returning home from california last weekend. in dealing with the time change i think i have lost more sleep than i've had, but that will all change this week, since today was another chemo day. plenty of sleep is just around the corner, something tells me.

my biggest goal for the past weekend was to get my little seedlings in the ground; they had taken a serious hit in last week's heat and i felt as though they were longing for more soil in a cooler location. we built a rasied bed in the old garden and filled it with our own homemade soil from the compost heap. already the seedlings are standing a bit taller, and i hope the deer and rabbits don't decide to make a tasty salad out of the lot. the gardening left me feeling very satisfied and i spent most of the rest of the weekend giving myself time to nap, regain some energy i had lost in all the traveling, and trying to get things organized for the upcoming week and chemo. i think i was fairly successful.

i've enjoyed living the past few weeks without much of a plan. aside from the business trip to squaw valley, there wasn't much on the calendar but i managed to fill my time with fufilling activities that made me happy to have my friends and family. perhaps the biggest improvement has been the warmer weather, which allows me to spend more time exercising outside. i don't aspire to set any land-speed records, but my lungs no longer hurt when i try to breathe hard and as a result, i am not so tired as i go about a run or ride. it might be unnoticable to most, but to me the difference is immeasurable and my spirits are higher because of it.

i've been loving the little things; the robin that lives in the tree in our front yard - he's been singing for days on end now. he sounds so happy, like he is just belting it out for the world to hear. i sat in the front yard the other night and watched lightning strikes to the northwest, zagging pink and gold down from the clouds, hitting something beyond my sight on the horizon. i passed foals in a field with their mothers at a horse farm the other morning; i was riding into a headwind and they begged me to take a break and watch them closer. testing out their fragile legs, rolling in the grass, impressive in the lessons they had already learned. i loved the way the turkish food hit my tounge on a rainy saturday night, small bites that let me taste each dish and just enjoy sitting back, looking at rotten enjoying the same food. i also loved the taste of the leftover cupcakes as i drove home along 95 with the expansion joints thumping under my tires. there were double rainbows and dark clouds. in squaw, there was the smell of the pine needles roasting in the sun as i sat next to the pool after lunch or as i huffed and puffed up a mountainside just to eat lunch. and, coming home, one of my most favorite moments of all, the sighting of the ridges of central pennsylvania under the plane - all of the sudden they were there, the dark green ridges, with expanses of farm fields in the valleys between. i tried to spot penn state, but we had missed it somehow. soon we hit harrisburg and we were on the ground, tired, but happy to be home. my shower ran over me, the warm water combining with the smell of freshly mowed grass coming in the window. home. small things. big deals.
