the good days
some days are better than others. this is true for everyone. sometimes we wake up on the good side of the bed, others, we can't seem to find our way out of bed, even though we've been slogging, bleary-eyed through the day for hours.
it is a fantastic day today. all the windows in my room are open and a cool fall breeze is blowing in smells of cut grass, leaves beginning to change, and earth roasting in the sunshine. last night the final thought i remember having before i fell asleep is that it just smelled so good outside. i pulled my covers up tighter around my neck and went to sleep. i woke up twelve hours later. it is still beautiful out there.
i can't really get too motivated to do much today. the drugs have slowed me down again. i've read through a couple of magazines, thumbed through a couple of catalogs, and sat with the dog begging at my side as i ate breakfast. soon mom will come home and i'll eat some lunch. these days are the harder one to get through, even though you might think it sounds easy. in reality, they are the only ones when i feel really under the weather, and even now it is no comparison to how i felt on cisplatin or carboplatin. but the hours serve as a constant reminder of what is going on, and many times the best option to get through the pestering funk is just to go back to sleep for a while. which is what i'll do after lunch, most likely.
a couple of days ago i baked a peach pie. it was my first peach go-round and the general consensus is that it was a winner. the crust is most often mentioned in people's remarks, but i personally fell for the peaches in this one, even without ice cream to go with it.

baking and cooking have been two things i've found i really enjoy since i first got sick. when i have the energy and motivation to do one or the other my days seem better. partially it is because i know what is going into my food and i can do my best to make something somewhat healthy, tasty, and filling. it is also because it makes me feel like i am doing something to help the people who help me so often. i know it isn't much but it makes me feel better. i won't have the energy to do it today but maybe next week i'll put together a few menus.
the other thing i did the other day that made me smile was sit on the couch between rotten and jimnerd as we watched an episode of "long way down". a favorite guy on either side of me, a good tv show, what more could i ask for? it was a nice way to spend part of the evening. earlier, rotten and i had cooked dinner for the family and we sat in the dining room, laughing at sarah palin parodies and shaking our heads in disbelief at the number of people out there who are probably going to vote for her without realizing she's not even the one running for president. dinner was a delicious first-go-round of a new pasta sauce recipe and a big salad, with ice cream and fresh strawberries for dessert. no wonder we ended up on the couch afterwards.
