tidal basin
rotten and i took a trip to the nation's capital on saturday. zayne joined us, a new resident of the area, and lead us on a tour of the cherry blossoms. it wasn't a day to spend a single minute inside any of the museums. the weathermen were wrong, and while their forecasts called for rain and cooler temps, the sun came out and the day warmed right up. luckily, plenty of people heeded the weathermen and stayed home. i heard many people talking about how they'd seen it much more crowded. don't get me wrong, there were plenty of people around the water. but it wasn't impossible to find your own patch of grass to sit on or your own branch to take a photo of.
my favorite part of the day was walking through the FDR memorial. the memorial is set up as a series of four outdoor "rooms", each representative of a term of his presidency. we walked through backwards, starting at the fourth term. water is a constant throughout the memorial, and the designers did a great job of incorporating plenty of areas to sit and ponder the many quotations from his presidency in the walls of the "rooms" (we couldn't really do it on saturday, it was a bit too crowded) along with plenty of trees. zayne and i were both smiling to smell the scent of pine needles baking in the sun mixing in with the scent of the cherry blossoms.
it is interesting to walk through the memorial and compare and contrast FDR's presidency to our recent history; i think it should be a requirement for all new senators and representatives, judges, and of course the president, to walk through the memorial and reflect upon the lessons learned during the early decades of the 1900's.
we finished the day at the world war II memorial, alternately standing and lying in the sun. loaded up on vitamin d, we headed back to bethesda on the metro (LOVE mass transit) and drove back to newark. it was my first day this round without a nap, and with the miles walked, i am still recovering a bit from the effort. it was a great day, though, and i am glad to have finally seen the cherry blossoms. i recommend them to all and would go back next year, for sure.
