oh, rats!
on friday night the girls and i enjoyed a rare night out. we started off with a bang at ruby's diner. i frequented this burger-and-shake establishment for a couple of reasons in the past year.
first of all, grandmother used to love to go there for lunch. like me, she always enjoyed a reason to dine out with family or friends. it is located near her favorite store, talbots, and after eating a sandwich and small helping of ice cream - i inherited my sweet tooth from her side of the family - she always liked doing a little shopping. i was always promised a twin sweater set; i always politely declined.
second of all, it became a place where i could reliably consume a high-calorie, somewhat satifsying meal during chemo and radiation treatments. there were days when the grease caused more harm than good in the way of heartburn, but there was little that tasted better or went down easier than french fries and a milkshake during those slim weeks. compared to ensure, ruby's offered a delectable menu full of foods i really should give up, but had the green light to devour during my "eat anything you can keep down" stage.
afterwards, the girls and i went to the movies to see "27 dresses". it is a complete and utter chick flick. i have a weakness for the mindless romatic comedy and couldn't say no to a couple of hours of entertainment. besides, the edward burns is just spectacular.
about twenty minutes prior to the end of the movie there was a disturbance in a group of teenage girls behind and to the right of where we were sitting. i could hear something skittering about, and some muffled talk of "it's a dog! it's a monkey!" but nothing too clear. a small contingent of women young and old moved their feet to the back of the seats in front of them.
and then it happened again, this time right behind where we were sitting.

the feet of the people sitting behind us did the wave as they kicked the backs of our seats. and we could hear everyone much clearer - "it's a rat!". there were shrieks and screams, oh-my-gods, and laughs. keep in mind, this was a theater completely full of women. we were sitting near the front of the room, and as we turned around to look, every single person in the theater had their feet up on the seat in front of them.
at the end of the movie, some girls sprinted out of the theater. we waited until most people had emptied out and made our exit; we were greeted with free movie tickets for another movie when we left - thank goodness for those rats!
