even my dog has gone commercial
i've settled in on the couch in some warm pants and a cozy sweatshirt and i'm watching charlie brown's christmas. why it is played before december is beyond me. but i have to admit, i can feel the holiday exitement creeping into my being a bit more each day. within a week or so i will be in the thick of it. i love the lights brightening my drives home from work, the thought of little kids who are counting the days until santa's arrival, and the complete glee with which i'll give my gifts this year. i am the type that sings along with the christmas songs in the stores (though i do try my best to avoid the big, commercial stores this time of year) and in the car. in fact, i've even been known to play christmas music in my car on a rainy day or mid-summer's day when i need a fix. i just makes me incredibly happy.
i'm hoping that this holiday will prove that i've changed from the little nearly-needle-less tree on the lot to the full, beautiful one finding its home under linus' blanket. it has been quite a transformation. and last christmas i really needed that blanket. every single day there's something that just amazes me and reminds me how far i've come. last christmas i wasn't at all sure of where i would be in a year. not that i thought i'd be gone; i just thought it might be really different.
but i lived in the moment, every moment, and focused on the experiences i had immediately at my feet. as horrible as it was to be going through treatment (and i guess it wasn't really all that horrible, just for a few days at a time) it did really teach me that it is so utterly important to live in the moment and make a concerted effort to be happy with every single day and all it brought along with it. this time of year i think it is hard to live like that; there are busy schedules and parties and shopping and friends and food and so much to plan and organize. but it is so much richer taken one day at a time. like a fantastic dessert, as cheesy as it might sound, it is best to savor one small bite at a time. sure, it is going to be gone eventually but thank goodness there's more to the menu.
in other unrelated news, i have seen a string of good movies lately. i recommend: the good shepard, the last kiss, and the lives of others. i have also been listening to some good music on the npr website. they have a live concert recording of jose gonzalez that is just the right work elixir. and i have been losing an exceptionally distressing number of card games, too. can someone be my scrabble coach? i have been talking a big game and i'm beginning to worry...
enjoy some thanksgiving leftovers...

even though he's stuffed, this little turkey avoided the fate of his feathered friend featured in the background.

jimnerd and i were a little less skinny following dinner.

i was on the phone with zayne with the sun setting beautifully over the front yard.
